How to cure a wooden mate?

1 - Grease the inside with oil or butter.

Using your finger or a towel, cover the inside walls with a thin layer of grease. This will prevent the wood from cracking and clogging the pores. Leave to stand for 6 hours.

2 - Add wet yerba and leave to stand for around 12 hours.

Once the 12 hours have passed, remove the yerba with a spoon and the grease with a towel.

3 - Repeat the process one more time

But this time, don't use any grease, just used yerba.

4 - Your mate is ready!

With daily use, wood improves the taste and strengthens its resistance.

How to cure a calabaza mate cup?

1- Fill it with used yerba and hot water.

Use the wet yerba to fill the new calabaza.

2 - Leave to rest for 24 hours

This softens the inner walls, reduces the calabaza's natural bitter taste and helps form a protective film.

3 - Scrape

After 24 hours, remove the yerba and gently scrape the inside with a spoon to remove any remaining yerba and calabaza residue.

4 - Repeat from the beginning.

Twice is enough for the calabaza to be properly cured.

Recommendation for wooden or calabaza mate:

Do not wash with water after use (use a towel to dry and remove any remaining yerba).

Do not fill the mate with water beyond the point of contact between the ring and the mate, that means do not fill it all the way to the top.
